The Feeling of Family

The drive was lined
with wintergreen firs,
friendly and sharp
against the blank blanket
of fluffy, white snow.

I lifted the bronze knocker,
which hung heavily
on a large, oak door.
One drop made a sharp thud
that pierced the air
and shocked even those expecting.

A friendly smile beckoned us in
to a spacious foyer and cheery abode.
We placed our present on the table
amidst cinnamon scented candles
and gently wrapped chocolates.

In the kitchen, busy bodies
rushed to and fro,
making last minute preparations.
Dippers filled mugs with warm cider
and greedy fingers
poked at pastries.

I marveled at how flexible
we had all been.
A party whipped up
as quick as mousse, which
had recently gone missing (Uncle Dan...).
